> > Danzig

The Free State of Danzig was created as a result of the Treaty of Versailles 1919. Stamps were issued bearing the legend Freie Stadt Danzig. At the start of World War II Germany annexed the Free City of Danzig and murdered the Polish Postmen that were defending the Polish post office. At the end of World War II the Treaty of Yalta placed the city under the Polish name Gdansk and this “ window on the Baltic Sea”  was returned to Poland.
