A total of 2,900 athletes from 90 countries will compete in 16 sports. For the first time, ski mountaineering will be included in the Olympic programme, alongside ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, short track speed skating, snowboarding, freestyle skiing, alpine skiing, curling, luge, bobsleigh, skeleton, biathlon, cross- country skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAmong Slovene fans there is keen interest in the ski jumping events, which will take place in Predazzo. When the polje flooded, they used wooden boats similar to those used on the intermittent Lake Cerknica. They rowed across the water to carry out their daily tasks, most often to the village of Planina.
