Václav Špála was an important Czech painter, graphic artist and illustrator, whose work is one of the basic pillars of Czech modern art. His early works were dominated by distinctive colours, shape deformation and dynamic brushstrokes. In 1911, in the painting Idyll (Two Girls Bathing), he used for the first time a typical combination of two colors – a mutually balancing warm red and a cold blue. In the period after 1923, he began to look for new themes and concentrated on landscape painting. This period of Špála's work is called the Green Period, which lasted until 1926. However, the peak of his painting was the so-called Blue Period, in which he used a single color in many shades. After 1930, Václav Špála focused mainly on painting bouquets and still lifes. Špála's paintings of flowers and still lifes, as well as his landscape works, still excel in their distinctive color. Rich and vibrant colors add liveliness and dynamism to his works, creating an unmistakable visual impression.
