2025 Europa - National Archaeological Discoveries

As the historian Hans-Joachim Gehrke has observed, Alexander the Great has put his stamp on world history like no other ruler. Lysimachus, one of his first Successors, ruled the region of Thrace and northwestern Asia Minor where he was proclaimed king. In this series of gold staters, the ruler chooses to depict on their main side the idealized head of the deified Alexander the Great. The world-ruler is depicted with the horn of Ammon Zeus and wears the simple banded Macedonian royal diadem. This representation reflects the work of Lysippus, the only sculptor to whom Alexander entrusted the creation of his image, while he was alive.
