Magyar Posta is issuing a special souvenir sheet to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian Bar Associations.
After the Compromise of 1867, a series of laws regulating the organs of justice were enacted, among which the rules governing the professional activities of lawyers were promulgated by Act XXXIV of 1874. This Act was among the first in Europe to make membership of a bar association compulsory in order to practise as a lawyer. The first regional bar associations were established in 1875 pursuant to this law. One such association, the Budapest Bar Association, held its inaugural general meeting on 20 February that year with the participation of 430 lawyers.
