FIP is a world organisation embracing national federations of stamp collectors and philatelists. It was founded in Paris on 18 June 1926 by the philatelic associations of seven European countries, namely France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and Austria, and has since grown into a federation with a global network. At present, FIP is based in Zurich.
FIP brings together national federations, regulates official stamp exhibitions and oversees the international judging of collections. The federation’s main aims are to promote stamp collecting, to support the collecting community and to grant patronage for international exhibitions. Its official website features international exhibition calendars and regulations. FIP also supports several major stamp exhibitions each year. It usually holds its congress every two years, always during one of the international exhibitions sponsored by the federation.
