Magyar Posta is marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Vasarely Museum in Pécs by issuing a special souvenir sheet.
The museum of Victor Vasarely (born Győző Vásárhelyi, 1906–1997) opened in 1976 in Pécs, his hometown. It was established in a building chosen by the artist himself, which was originally a canon’s residence erected in 1838.
Hundreds of works donated between 1969 and 1991 by the artist, considered to be the father and leading light of Op Art, form the basis of the permanent exhibition. This is supplemented by related works by important masters of international abstract art. The exhibition gives an overview of Vasarely’s oeuvre, from his early commercial graphic designs and various versions of his world-renowned Zebras, regarded as a forerunner of Op Art, through his black- and-white constructive works, to his best-known colourful pieces based on the illusion of movement and space. The exhibition follows Victor Vasarely’s own chronological division, which links each creative period to the natural and environmental experiences that inspired them, and to his visual experiments, while outlining the gradual abstraction of organic forms and the emergence of compositions employing geometric, kinetic, and optical effects.
