It is the third time that the Olympic Winter Games have been hosted by Italy. Cortina d’Ampezzo first held the Games in 1956. It was intended to be the venue for the Olympics back in 1944 but that plan was thwarted by the war. It was in Cortina that figure skater Karol Divín came in fifth place and thus became the first Slovak sportsman to earn points in an individual event at the Olympic Winter Games.
Fifty years later Turin welcomed the Olympians. Radoslav Židek won silver in Bardonecchia in the snowboard cross, on its debut as an Olympic discipline; it was the first medal from the Olympic Winter Games for the independent Slovakia.
