30 years ago, on February 6, 1996, the United Kingdom handed over to Ukraine the Faraday Antarctic station, later renamed Akademik Vernadsky.
At the station, Ukrainians not only continued, but also significantly expanded research, adding complex biological ones to geophysical and meteorological ones. Our scientists study almost the entire geosphere — from living organisms to climate, ocean, magnetic fields, and space weather. Research at Vernadsky continues year-round and has not stopped even during the war with Russia and the COVID-19 pandemic. Some series of observations at the Ukrainian Vernadsky are the longest in Antarctica: climate data have been measured since 1947, the Earth's magnetic field since 1954, and the concentration of ozone since 1957.
In addition to the Akademik Vernadsky station, Ukraine has an ice-class research vessel Noosphere in Antarctica, which provides logistics and research, in particular within the framework of international cooperation.
