Beautiful new postage stamp issue from the popular series “National Dishes of Ukraine”.
This stamp celebrates one of the most beloved and iconic Ukrainian dishes — Varenyky with Cherries (вареники з вишнею). Traditionally prepared in summer with fresh, ripe cherries, cherry dumplings have always been a symbol of Ukrainian hospitality, generosity, and abundance. They were commonly served at family celebrations, holidays, and village fairs.
Particularly popular in the Poltava, Kyiv, Cherkasy regions, as well as in Podillia and Galicia, varenyky are hand-shaped from soft wheat dough and filled with juicy cherries. The filling is often simmered with sugar and starch to keep the berries whole. They are boiled in salted water and traditionally served with sour cream, melted butter, or sweet berry sauce.
Regional variations include steamed varenyky, different dough textures, and combinations with other fruits and berries. Cherry Dumplings are deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture and are frequently mentioned in folk songs, literature, and folklore.
